The Church Universal

and Triumphant

Large newspaper ads proclaim "HEAR THE LORD'S PROPHECY for our time out of the mouth of the emissaries of God--the seven archangels who cometh this hour to pour out the vials of the seven last plagues upon the earth. And healing of the nations!" Next to a drawing of an angel, is a photograph of Elizabeth Clare Prophet. "Inner Workshops" are offered (for a price) which promise the "Teachings of the Ascended Masters". Scriptures are quoted without the source mentioned, and then interpreted to fit the doctrines of the Church Universal and Triumphant. "Don't wait a moment longer to enlist the aid of archangels!" The advertisement urges. Is any of this as Christian as it sounds? Who is Elizabeth Clare Prophet?

Elizabeth Clare Prophet was first a disciple, and then the wife of Mark L. Prophet. He founded a group in 1958 called "The Summit Lighthouse", which combined spiritism, occult practices, and a mystical, Eastern world-view. Elizabeth, herself, had been previously involved with contacting "the spirit of St. Germain" through mediumistic practices. When Mark and Elizabeth formed their team, they claimed to be the two witnesses of Revelation, chapter eleven. They also claimed contact with the "Great White Brotherhood", and believed they were messengers of these "Ascended Masters". The list included the aforementioned Saint Germain, a French eighteenth-century occultist, Jesus the Christ (bearing little resemblance to the Jesus Christ of the Bible), Mary, Master Kuthumi, Master Godfre, and El Morya (the original contact of Mark Prophet). When Mark Prophet died in 1973, he was reported to have joined these other "Ascended Masters" under the "spirit name" of "Lanello". Elizabeth Clare Prophet dictates messages supposedly received from these "Ascended Masters" to her followers, called "Chelas". She is recognized by them as the absolute authority on all spiritual matters.

The Church Universal and Triumphant will deny outright that they are in communication with the dead. Yet, Elizabeth Clare Prophet freely admits communication with her dead husband. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 reads, "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son, or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, or who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, OR A MEDIUM, OR A SPIRITIST, OR ONE WHO CALLS UP THE DEAD. FOR WHOEVER DOES THESE THINGS IS DETESTABLE TO THE LORD." So, despite the denials, and the liberal sprinkling of Bible verses found among church writings, Christians would have no part in these occult practices of the Church Universal and Triumphant, nor would they accept the teachings out of the mouth of one receiving them in a spiritistic manner.

The "Jesus Christ" of the Church Universal and Triumphant is not the Jesus Christ of the Bible. Their main concern with Jesus, other than his reported "messages" as an "ascended master", is with His alleged "lost years". They present a workshop called "The Lost Years of Jesus", and advertise that, "From his twelfth to his thirtieth year, Jesus Christ was a student of the mysteries of God in the Near and Far East...At last we understand the mission and why thirty years of preparation were required for his three-year ministry. He came to demonstrate the laws of your own Christhood." These convenient "lost years" allow Elizabeth Clare Prophet to introduce Eastern mystical ideas, and couple them with the name of Jesus. Likewise, it allows an Eastern twist to be put on many Scriptures. Their so-called documentation on the "lost years" does not stand up to close examination by scholars. Also, "Christhood" or "Christ Consciousness" are not Christian concepts, but Eastern religion.

The Jesus Christ of the Bible is truly God and truly man. Jesus is called the "only God" in 1 Timothy 1:16,17, and "Emmanuel, God with us", in Matthew 1:23. The "God" of the Church Universal and Triumphant is the Eastern Godforce, impersonal and unapproachable, except through their "Ascended Masters", speaking through their messenger medium, Elizabeth Clare Prophet.

The second coming of Christ is considered no more than the "realization of God consciousness", although the Bible speaks of a literal, future event. (See Revelation 1:8). The shed blood of Christ, which cleanses us of our sins, (see 1 John 1:9,; ,Acts 20:28), has been replaced by a "cleansing violet consuming flame". The Trinity, that is the manifestation of the One God of the Bible as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, has been altered to this formula, "In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Mother and of the Holy Spirit, Amen." It will not be too difficult to discern that the addition of the "Mother" is none other than "Guru Ma", Elizabeth Clare Prophet! She forthrightly proclaims, "Let's defend our right to be torchbearers under the banner of peace marching together with the Mother of the World into the Age of Aquarius." That's one march Christians would do well to avoid.

The Church Universal and Triumphant practices chanting that begins in English, builds to a higher and higher pitch, and ends up in an unintelligible gibberish. In addition to these emotion-charged meetings, each devotee is also taught to speak forth "decrees" and "fiats" to change the condition of the world by the spoken word. Perhaps the most disturbing chanting to a Christian is the repetition of the phrase "I AM THAT I AM", with the understanding that this is confirming his/her own deity! "I AM" is the exclusive name of God. (See Exodus 3:13-15). Isaiah 42:8 says, "I will not give My glory to another." As Christians we worship and respect God, the great "I AM", but we would never presume to plagiarize His name, or attempt to infringe on His exclusive Godship. "The LORD our God, the LORD is one!" (Deuteronomy 6:4). He is forever our Creator, and we are forever His creation. We will be with Him one day as "Kings and Priests" (See Revelation 1:6), but never as gods, or part of a God-Force!

Although the Church Universal and Triumphant claims that reincarnation was the original faith of the Jews, Christians, and Essenes, the historical evidence is against them. Likewise, the Bible plainly says,

"It is appointed unto men to die ONCE, and after this the JUDGMENT." (Hebrews 9:27).

Judgment follows death, and we do not go around and around, according to the Bible. Reincarnation is Eastern Mysticism, the resurrection is Christian doctrine, and is dependent on a right relationship with the true Jesus Christ.

"If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved." (Romans 10:9)

We appeal to Christians who may have become involved with this group to first of all, repent of your involvement in spiritistic practices. Ask for forgiveness of God, start reading the Bible alone, and return to Jesus Christ for salvation, rather than trying to earn your own. (Ephesians 2:8,9). Remember, you have this life, and then the judgment. The Bible revelation takes precedence over any other revelations, no matter how sincerely they may be transmitted.
