is it Really a Religion ?

Rosicrucianism claims that it is not a religion. The familiar advertisement with a lightning bolt above a man's bowed head, promises enlightenment and fulfillment. The Rosicrucian publication, "The Secret Schools", page 19, says, "Man, through his own individual and consciously-made efforts, must attain spiritual enlightenment and ultimate immortality". People responding to the advertisement find themselves drawn into a secret society embroiled in a labyrinth of Pagan mythology, mixed with Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, mysticism, and the occult. Who are the Rosicrucians, past and present?

Rosicrucians claim much earlier beginnings for themselves than can be documented, one faction even claiming ties to Thutmose III, about 1500 B.C. in Egypt. (Who and What are the Rosicrucians? p.8) Their founder is generally claimed to be Christian Rosenkreuz, supposedly born in 1378 and died in 1484. However, the Encyclopedia Britannica (1971 edition), says, "Some regard the story as a statement of fact and hold Christian Rosenkreuz to have been the found of the order. More generally it is held to be a mythical explanation of the order and Christian Rosenkreuz is not a real person at all, but a symbolic character". In any event, the Rosicrucians are with us today, whatever their beginnings, but there are rival factions of the group.

Rosicrucians are found world-wide as well as in North America. One faction in the U.S.A. known as AMORC (Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis), is headquartered in San Jose, California. Nearby in Oceanside, California, is a second faction. A third faction is found in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. All the various U.S. leaders are prolific writers, and all argue bitterly with the others, mainly over the original source of their movement, which cannot be accurately documented anyway. Past history shows a link between Rosicrucianism and the Masonic Lodge, and AMORC is set up in a very similar way. Both groups deny any connection today other than being secret societies. The Pennsylvania faction of the Rosicrucians does require their members to be Masons, however.

One of the proclamations in their secret ceremonies says "May the roses bloom upon your cross". Indeed, the order is often called "The Mystical Order of the Rosy Cross". The symbolism includes a Christian-looking cross, with either a rose in the middle, or a cross surrounded by roses. However, the cross of the Rosicrucians is not the cross of Christianity. AMORC literature flatly denies that its "Rosy Cross" represents any connection with the Christian crucifix. To them, the cross represents, "the body of man" with the rose symbolizing "man's soul unfolding and evolving". This unchristian concept is followed through into their doctrines.

As we enter into the maze of doctrines expounded by the Rosicrucians, we can eventually sort out various statements and teachings concerning subjects of concern to Christians, like Jesus Christ, God, the Bible, Salvation, etc. Since Rosicrucians claim not to be a religion, and Christians might feel they could be Christians and Rosicrucians also, we present the following information.

To the Rosicrucians, God is an impersonal being composed of seven spirits, manifesting themselves as a "triune godhead". "The Rosicrucian Cosmo Conception", pages 376 and 252, include statements such as, "...The seven spirits before the throne...collectively, they are God and make us the triune godhead...the Father is the highest initiate among the humanity of the Saturn..." Truly, the Rosicrucian trinity is not the Christian Trinity. In the pages of the Bible, the One, True, Eternal God has revealed Himself in three ways, as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Since we cannot list the extensive scriptures to support this point due to space limitations, please send for our booklet, "Is the Trinity True?"). In the Rosicrucian mail-order lessons, new members (called Neophytes) are taught to petition the "Forty-two principal gods...expressions of the principal god, the Sun-God, AMEN-RA". Christians could have no part in this blatant idolatry, as their Holy God the Father is not some "highest initiate among the humanity of Saturn". "God is Spirit; and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (John 4:24).

"The Rosicrucian Philosophy", page 181, says of Christ, "the Christ spirit which entered the body of Jesus when Jesus Himself vacated it, was a ray from the cosmic Christ. We may follow Jesus back in His previous incarnations and can trace his growth to the present day." Also, "The Rosicrucian Cosmo Conception" mentions, "...The Son is the highest initiate of the Sun". Again we see that the "Jesus Christ" of the Rosicrucians is not the Jesus Christ of the Bible, who is eternally God (John 1:1), our Creator (Col. 1:16), and the only source of salvation (John 14:6) Reincarnation is likewise a false, Eastern philosophy directly opposed to the Bible truth of the resurrection, followed by judgment, (see Hebrews 9:27). The Jesus Christ of Christianity is eternal, not reincarnated, God manifest in the flesh (Matthew 1:23, not some "cosmic spirit".

Rosicrucians regard the Holy Spirit as "Jehovah". Their writings proclaim, "...the Holy Spirit (Jehovah) is the highest initiate of the Moon..." (ibid p.374). In the Bible, God is called "Yahweh" (YHWH). "Jehovah" is a false transliteration for the name of God, often used by the cults and occult, and even mistakenly used by some Christians. The reference "Jehovah" was never used by God, the Israelites, Jesus Christ, the Disciples, or the early church. The Holy Spirit is a manifestation of the One, True, Eternal God of the Bible, not some "initiate of the moon".

The Bible takes quite a beating at the hands of the Rosicrucians. For example, the book of Genesis is dismissed as a "beautiful poem". Genesis 1:1, which really reads, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" has been rewritten to read, "Out of the ever-existing essence (of space) the two-fold energy formed the double heaven." Hardly similar!

The Genesis account of the fifth day details the creation of marine life, and birds. (see Genesis 120-23). The Rosicrucian's description of the fifth day of creation differs greatly to include the creation of an Atlantis-like Lemurian epoch in which the differentiation of the sexes took place. Before that, the Rosicrucians teach man had been hermaphrodite (both male and female), and previous to that he had been without sex! (ibid pp.321-333). This attempt to combine the theory of evolution with the Bible account of creation simply will not work. The list of mutilated Bible verses could go on and on, but we believe you have the picture. Please remember to read the Bible alone, without the Rosicrucian rewrite, if you really want to hear God speaking to you.

The Rosicrucians really are a religion, despite their denials. Persons wishing to be free of the maze of Rosicrucian false doctrines are welcome to write to us for help.

Not all religions are Christian. There is a difference.

The Gospel message of salvation is clear

Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

No one comes to the Father,

except through Him.
